Defrosting Salmon
« on: August 17, 2019, 08:43:23 am »
I bought some salmon fillets for dinner tonight, and took them out of their packaging last night. Initially, I put the salmon with nothing on them on a rack and pan so that as they dried the condensation would fall off the first and not be reabsorbed into the fish. On the packaging it said I should have put Salmon in a plastic bag. I did that this morning because it was still pretty solidly frozen.

So what is the best way to defrost fish? The packaging in my salmon gives two directions, one says let them defrost in a plastic bag and the other just says let it defrost in the fridge.

I defrost mine in the fridge and that has always worked well.

Agreeing with  baritone108 -- I'll buy servings of fresh salmon when it's on sale and freeze them in their original package.

Then remove from freezer the morning before, put in fridge (in the same package) and by dinner cooking time the next day it's defrosted and ready to cook.

A fisherman buddy told me to defrost fish by leaving/putting them in a ziplock and submersing them in water.  It worked wonderfully with the pike fillets he gave me.

Thank you the information. Defrosting the fish went good, though the meal itself did not because I forgot to pat dry the fish before taking off the skin and I destroyed the salmon unfortunately.

Just don't do what my MIL does: unwrap it and put it in a bowl of water! The first time I saw her doing that she spotted me goggling in disbelief, and kindly explained 'you should try defrosting it that way; it's so much quicker!'

It used to amaze me how she mishandles good foodstuffs, till I worked out that she really has no sense of taste; to her, if a food is expensive and/or high-prestige, and served with all the appropriate accompaniments, it's by definition 'good', no matter how soggy and tasteless it has been made by bad preparation.

Was she trying to bring it back to life?

Did you cook it anyway and make salmon salad out of it?  (Just like tuna salad, but with your fish instead.)

I'm now a big fan of creamy salads so unfortunately I didn't try that, though I will consider it next time.
