Fifty masks done! Well, there's 52 in the picture - apparently I can't count! I had done five for myself, and 50 for this group on Facebook, so I guess I have two left over for a friend, which is good. I may do more for some of the folks in my church if they want them (we have quite a few elderly folks). They're not hard once you figure out the pattern, and how to do the pleats easier! Now I will move on to other things for a little while, as I have spent the better part of a week doing this.

" They're not hard once you figure out the pattern, "

Maybe not hard but time consumming. Plus the better ones demand expensive fabric.
Kudos to you!

Aw thanks Miriam! I am happy to have a way to use up some of my stash. Not enough of it, but some anyway.

Pattycake, I have gone public with the statement that " If anyone ever in the future makes fun of me and my stash, and then wants parts of said stash or for me to bail them out by making stuff for them, the answer will be 'NO!' "

gmatoy, I usually have a very well stocked pantry and freezers.  Some people have made fun of me before but DH never has.  When this all started going down?  We weren't the ones panic buying toilet paper, kleenex and paper towel.  Or much of anything, really.  The only thing we didn't have on hand was disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer because we don't use them on a regular basis.  So I'm still trying to hunt those down whenever I go shopping.  But I'm not making trips to a bunch of different stores to find them.

People have made fun of my yarn stash before, too.  But now I have what I need to keep busy!

My "Lovely Assistant" [a.k.a. "The Captain"/my husband] can hold two conflicting opinions: that I [Miriam] own too much stuff!!

And: "Darling, do we have any/a Thing X?".
Miriam: "Well, yes, my darling, we do tend to have Thing X (because your wife used to be flat broke and has a horrible tendancy to keep things that are not broken 'in case we need them someday'), so let me look in my stash.  Oh, look, Thing X!".

My current irony: I have the stash of yarn, sitting there, eyeing me up like a somewhat-less-than-terrifying predator, and I'm using Lockdown to sort through the thousands of photos I can accumulate during the three (or so) years since my last laptop got too full (and old) to handle them.

The 'yarn monster' must wait. ;) ;D ;D ;D

It's certainly saving the proverbial bacon right now.  We don't have a lot of money at that moment so being able to mostly live out of our freezer and pantry not only saves grocery store trips but it also saves money!

Generally speaking, we shop once a week for perishables at the store with the most things we need on sale.  This week, there is one store that if you spend so much, you get a nice freebee.  And there are quite a few things we need that are pricey.  So we'll go there and try to hit the price point.  Bonus points for this particular store being well set up for social distancing and disinfecting.  They have a portable washing unit set up in the lobby so you can wash your hands!  Plus gloves, hand sanitizer and cart sanitizer, as well as markings on the floor.

I have for a long time been a stocker-upper too. Since moving out to the country mostly. I stock up on toilet paper, coffee, coffeemate, ketchup, All Bran Buds, and a couple of other things, starting in the late summer through the fall. Then I don't have to tote the heavy, non-perishable stuff in the winter. So I am still good to go (ha! I see what I did there... LOL!) for a few weeks. It has been very annoying though not to be able to get regular produce, especially the bananas - what's with that? and a few other things. I was supposed to go the the early shopping today, but we had a huge dump of snow (6 inches, maybe a bit more) yesterday and it's not melted off yet, so I stayed home. I had pre-planned for this by buying some frozen veg. and making sure I had refilled the water jugs. (My water is drinkable, but it will kill the coffee maker within 6 months with sediment!)

gmatoy, I like your response to stash mockers!

One of my current projects this week is to clear out all the craft stuff that, if I am very realistic and honest with myself, I will never use or do. I have a few people that might be interested, so I am sure they will go quickly. But I will have to stack them somewhere for a while, I imagine. Actually, if the church will take a lot of it, I could drive it over there and leave it in the foyer for the teachers to go through later, after they let it "quarantine" for a couple of weeks, since it won't be in anyone's way.

Ooh, that is marvellous: being able to get the clutter out of your home, rather than waiting for this isolating to be over.  I hope you manage to 'free' a lot of stuff. :)

Today I ran some (12 yards) of my giant spool of twill tape across the street to the wonderful neighbor. She offered to buy it and I declined. It was a spool with a gross (144 yards) on it when it was bought at a ridiculously low price and it probably has 80 yards still on it, despite the fact that I've sewn with it repeatedly! We had a nice discussion about making masks and what was the right thing to do during this time. We both think that it isn't right for us to try to make money now. We are both still getting our income during this time, and have plenty of time to spend making the masks, so that makes us think now isn't the time to try to make a dollar.

I don't have a problem with people selling masks.  Maybe it's someone who has lost their job, currently, and is struggling to make ends meet.  Maybe it is someone who is using the money to donate to the food bank.  But those that can afford to donate them, great!

Personally, I like the trading and bartering that is going on right now.  I found yeast at Costco and bought extra with the intent to give some out to some folks who hadn't been able to find it.  I took the unopened package and they had their containers.  I opened the package and filled their containers while we all maintained distance.  One person gave me a jar of homemade salsa, one person gave me a dozen eggs and one person gave me a coupon to cash in for a dozen carnations once the flower shop she works at opens up again.  I needed eggs one day and messaged that person; she accepted a jar of my homemade dill pickles in trade.  I traded homemade bread for eggs, too, with my usual 'dealer'.

There is a professional photographer in the neighbourhood who is offering front porch mini sessions in exchange for a food bank donation, done on faith on her part.  I offered her a jar of my pickled carrots, in addition, because I know she likes them.

STiG, I don't have a problem with people selling them for reasonable prices. My neighbor and I have fabric stashes that will probably outlive us, time on our hands (no children to care for, etc.) and a steady income. Doesn't feel right for us to charge.

I get that - I'm making comfort hearts and ear savers.  I won't be charging for those.

I started my sewing machine up and went through my sewing stuff and have made 5 masks, which I am quite proud of. (Three for me, 2 for DH.) They are not very good, so I won’t give them away. I lost my quilting materials in a flood a few years ago, The one I like best is from a skirt my grandmother made for me 60 years ago. It has some handwork on it so looks ridiculously formal. I used pipe cleaners DH had bought 50 years ago. Hoarding is not always a bad thing. (I am a neat hoarder, not a TV hoarder.)
