Preparing for Christmas 2020?
« on: December 27, 2019, 11:44:43 pm »
Is anyone already looking ahead to next Christmas? The other day I bought some ornament hooks and wrapping paper on sale at Walgreen's, and made a note that my neighbor likes the Lindor chocolates I got her and her husband a LOT (so she will get them next year, as well!). What are you doing to prepare for the next holiday season?

I bought some new light decorations for my front windows the day after Christmas.  Got a very good price on them.

Bought some big, fat, colorful lights for the shrubbery. I remember loving the big, fat, (C9 bulbs) colorful lights as a kid so I used to use my parent's old ones - the electric bill was almost $150! But the light string got older and my wallet got tighter. So the 1960's C9 light string was retired.

Finally found LED C9 big, fat, colorful lights! Yea! Already put them out to be sure they are what I want and I have enough (might get a couple more). Look great! So started planning the new display for the next year and years' after.

Thanks for the info about your electric bill. We always suspected that but I don’t track things well.

I remember my father putting those fat lightbulbs on our (real pine) Christmas tree when we were kids. That was his job, and it was ours to decorate it and my mother's to put the tinsel on for the finishing touch. Those hot lights would naturally speed the drying-up process of the tree, and after Christmas we would be stepping on pine needles embedded in the living room rug until the following summer. But whenever I see the large lights they remind me of childhood Christmases.

Love this thread!

I have purchased some more decorations that are on sale. I still have my eye on one over at Horchow (a Neiman Marcus store) but I am not willing to pay nearly $100 for it. Alas, though, it is not yet on sale but I am hopeful. If it doesn't go on sale I have decided not to buy it. But I am also very patient.

I'm starting the hunt for pure beeswax candles for next year's Christmas tree. Nobody has made candles intended for Christmas trees for more than a generation, so I generally have to buy very long thin ones and cut them into three. My last batch were actually bought in an Orthodox cathedral in Greece, and they kept me going for several years. I've been searching online but all the ones I have found so far are tapered, which means that only the lower two-thirds length would be useable.

What do they mean by saying those candles are not for ears? That's got to mean something other than what I think it might mean.

Some people candle their ears to get wax to come out.

Jackpot! That's exactly what I needed, and I have ordered them already. (I should have figured that the Germans wouldn't give up using real candles for the Weihnachtsbaum as feebly as the British have.) Thank you!

They look a bit like this, except that mine have a clip to hold the candle, instead of a socket.

The bottom part clips on to a branch, and there's a ball joint between the clip and the candleholder part; so that even if the clip isn't vertical, you can twist the candleholder so that the candle is vertical.

I never found my Christmas curtains or table runner, so I will be looking for clearance Christmas fabric to make new ones for next year. This will also guarantee that I find the original ones before next December. I also want to find more decor for the house. I just never got into the spirit this year, I think I need more decorations.
