My Family Easter Tradition usually occurred sometime in July.  That's when we would finally be able to sniff out the last hidden Easter Egg!

LOL!  Reminds of the year that my dad was mowing in the heat of summer and hit a lost Easter egg with the mower. That was when the "Easter Bunny" would hide the hard-boiled eggs that we had colored and left out for him. Dad was not happy.

I'm not sure how old I was, but I was little. My great aunt stuffed me in this horribly itchy Easter dress with equally itchy tights and patent leather shoes. About 10-15 minutes into Easter Sunday Service, I'd reached my limit and striped buck naked except for my panties. At some point she convinced me to put my slip back on, but that was only after I was convinced that it did NOT have itchy ass lace on it.

In our little town, the cemetery was nestled against the side of a large, steep hill we called the ‘High Tor’.  Half way up the hill was a small amphitheater that overlooked the Hudson River to the east.  It saw the occasional Wedding or memorial service and was an easy hike on a Saturday afternoon.

Our church had too many people to use it for an Easter sunrise service but an AME church in town made good use of it every Easter.  They also staged a pancake breakfast on Easter morning that just about everybody who celebrated Easter attended at one time or another.

Our church had a tradition of holding sunrise (Son Rise) services at a pavilion overlooking a lake. The service was lead by the Senior High Fellowship group. My Senior year of high school, I gave the sermon. I remember how scared I was, but I had taken a public speaking class at school and managed to "fake it, until you make it."

Afterwards, I realized that I had never gone to any other sunrise services before that one. I'm the oldest of 7 children and I think it was too much for my mother to even consider. I'm glad I have that memory.

My church has a nice big lawn with a huge cross, and that's where we'd set up chairs for Sunrise Service on Easter.  I loved it.  As an extreme early bird, I liked to go to that service, because 'for one day a year, church is on MY schedule!'.  (insert polite laughs here).

To honor Memorial Day I donate money for as many veterans giving out paper poppy flowers as I come across, sometimes going out of my way to a particular store to do it (the veterans will stand outside stores). I do it in remembrance of my father, who was a WW2 veteran. But I don't do anything else specific to celebrate the holiday. Many of the people in my area treat it as a sort of summer holiday, grilling out, etc.

This is Fleet Week in NYC.  There will be a parade of Navy ships up the Hudson this morning.  For the week ships will be open for visiting and there will be memorial services on the Intrepid.
