Good Morning!
I just heard on the radio that there is a huge recall on romaine lettuce - again. If you're heading out to do the last of the Thanksgiving shopping, you might want to rethink your choice of greens. If you already bought romaine lettuce, the CDC recommends that you throw it away, even if some of it has been eaten and nobody got sick.

Our stores have pulled all Romaine from the shelves since the first warning came out.

At least here, technically, it isn't a recall. We're being told not to eat it but we can't take it back to the store for a refund. This was done in order to appease the producers organization, according to the article I read.
I'm not doing my CSA this winter so I'm not getting lettuce and other greens. So much for salads for a while...

CSA is Community Sourced Agriculture? I never heard of it until I searched for it.

Community sourced, community shared, community supported. All the same thing. You pay so much a month and the farmer provides you with a basket of vegetables each week that you pick up at the farm. What you get depends on the season and how good the crops are doing/have done. Winter, we got root vegetables and greenhouse greens, mostly.

RubyCat -- Thanks for the PSA. When I went shopping today all the romain lettuce had been removed from the shelves. I picked up a head of Iceberg and then heard (from an unreliable source) that ALL lettuce was in danger.
I just looked at the CDC link and didn't find anything saying all lettuce was in danger, just the romain.
To be safe I'll use spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, carrots, cucumber, and tomatoes for my salad tomorrow. No lettuce.
I kinda think that the stores would be first notified and maybe the Iceberg would be safe since it was still on the shelves? But I'm not going to take chances.

Iceberg would be safe if you peel off the outer leaves. Much harder for contaminated water to penetrate into the inner leaves.
All vegetables could potentially be contaminated if the irrigation water contains bacteria. For vegetables that you can soak, if you are on city tap water, it has chlorine. If you leave it soaking in water, turning them to make sure all surfaces contact the water, for about 20 minutes or so, the level of chlorine in municipally supplied water should be enough.
Spinach is probably more of a risk than iceberg, though.

One of my coworkers didn't hear about the recall and tried to order a caesar salad from a mom and pop place. They told her they're not serving romaine lettuce. I'm glad the recall is taken seriously.
Caesar salad with light dressing is my go to lunch when I want to eat healthy. Good thing I haven't been :P.
