Life in General / Re: Wearing a hat indoors
« on: April 22, 2022, 02:05:21 pm »
It turns out I needn't have worried...it wasn't a really fancy tea place, and there was a guy there in a baseball hat!

That said, I'm glad I had all of your info and opinions in my little arsenal. Thank you.

Where I live, the only place a hat must be removed - by everyone - is the Legion.

I wouldn't worry about wearing a hat indoors otherwise, even if it is a ball cap.  There are so many people who wear hats for medical reasons - cancer treatment, alopecia or oogyda's surgery example - that most people don't bat an eye.  If your hat matches your 'ensemble', you're fine.

Thanks...I'm in Toronto and it's not at a Legion so I think I'll be OK!!  ;D

Thank you all for the responses! I trust all of your opinions more than Google :)

The clip-in fringe is a cute idea, thanks. I'm going to look at scarf options as well.

The hat I'm thinking of wearing is a newsboy cap with a houndstooth pattern - I think it'll be afternoon-tea-appropriate enough.

I'm still holding out hope that my forehead will be healed enough to just cover it with make-up!

WARNING: some may find this squicky. It's not that graphic but wanted to warn people just in case!

I have some kind of weird bug bite that I had an allergic reaction to **in the middle of my forehead** (just my luck). It's healing nicely, but it's still a bit red and has a bug-bite-type scab.

This Saturday I'm going to "afternoon tea" with my Mom and my sister.

If my forehead isn't cleared up by Saturday can I wear a hat indoors at the restaurant? Are hats at restaurants considered rude?? (the hat is cute, it's not a baseball cap or something)

I don't think it'll be cleared up by then for concealer to hide it, but I'll probably try!

(if only bangs could be cut for a day and then grow back out...)

Technoquette / Re: Oh, my. Niece is at it again!

Pretty sure this was a joke. As other posters have said, this is a specific, jokey style of posting.

Ask yourself...if this were someone else posting, not niece who has been so annoying on FB, would you have reacted this way?

Maybe it's time to hide her feed, so you can choose when you want to "catch up" with her; you can do it for 30 days and then when she starts to show up again decide if you want to keep hiding.

Life in General / Re: Mrs., Miss or Ms.?

Thanks for the responses!

I usually always default to Ms. if I'm not sure of their preference; I think I was thrown off by a close friend who is married but goes by "Miss MaidenName."

Of course, then I started googling and learned that some people use "Mrs. MaidenName," which seems odd to me!

(Thanks for the Emily Post link, Hmmm, I couldn't for the life of me remember the name "Emily Post" yesterday when I was quickly trying to find a straight answer.)

I once wrote to someone and wasn't sure of their marital status, and they blasted me for using "Ms." even though they're married...which I had no way of knowing. People are interesting.

I had this question from someone today...I feel like the answer should be relatively straightforward, but I'm also able to talk myself out of it.

Writing a business letter. We know that the recipient is married, but she uses her maiden name.

Would you address the letter to Mrs., Miss or Ms.?

(I said that it's a personal thing; I recommended using "Ms." unless otherwise instructed.)

Back when I was new to the Smart Phone world (I was a late bloomer there), I was talking to my friend.  On the Smartphone.  While frantically searching my apartment for my smart phone.

I wear glasses. I can't tell you the number of times I've been frantically searching for my glasses and they've either been actually on my face or on top of my head. 🤷🤣

Whenever I can't find my sunglasses the first thing I do is put my hand on my head!

I just washed my lunch dishes, then threw out my spoon and carried the dirty paper towel I used to dry it back to my desk.

Is that what you mean?  ::)
Absolutely fits this thread!

Oh, I have lots of these!!

I once found the parchment paper roll in the fridge...I remember putting it there, and wondering why it didn't fit!

Did the same with the coffee pot in the cupboard at my dad's house (but I was laughing so hard I couldn't tell anyone why I was laughing).

It sounds to me like DD#2 is worried about her friend's mom, and maybe wants to get your input.

Is DD#2 aware of the issues you had with Karen before?

I think you can go for lunch without committing to a close friendship. Sounds like you'll be on your guard anyway.

I really hated when Karens used my name from my name tag. I think that was the signal to you that "I'll be able to name you when I report this to your manager." Glad I had a great manager who backed her staff.

This was the reason I hated wearing a nametag when I worked in a university. At award ceremonies we would have people come up, obnoxiously look at my nametag and say "Well, Shadow, perhaps you'd like to explain why my son has been queuing for his gown for twenty minutes?"

It's obviously a power play, because if I had replied "Well, Ricky, it's because he showed up twenty minutes late," there would have been hell to pay.

Yes, it's the way they use a name with emphasis. With snark in their voices. "Well, Raintree, I'd like a word with the manager." Which was fine with me, the manager wasn't going to get upset with me for enforcing store policy like no, I can't refund that item you opened, used, and lost the receipt for. The manager was more likely to enter the break room later and commiserate about that miserable, unreasonable, demanding customer.

The store I worked at had name tags for vendors, so while the Coca Cola vendor was there stocking the soda, they wore the store nametag with "Coke" on it.

One of my co-workers adopted the "Keebler" nametag. Even most store employees thought that was his real name!

There was also one employee who had been there for years who wore a nametag that said "New Employee" on it.

My husband and I recently started watching the show "Superstore" and the main character wears a different name on her nametag every day because she doesn't want customers to know her real name. (not sure if that's through the whole series, we only watched a couple of episodes)
