Entertaining and Hospitality / Re: Splitting the bill at a restaurant

When I lived in the States in the 90's there were a group of us from 5 different countries who would spend the weekends together, we went out to eat a lot and always had cash. We always worked out our own meals/drinks and put in what we ate/drank plus we each tipped on our own totals. I still have the tip card lol - it was just how we did it, we never even thought of getting the server to figure it out for us. To be honest I don't see it as their job to figure it out, they have enough to do.

I've also politely asked to speak to someone else after asking them to repeat themselves a few times. Sometimes I find its not just the accent but the comprehension on their end.

Have you looked into a Feliway type product? https://www.feliway.com/nz its not on this website but I'm sure they have a collar too. I'd go with the carrier for both of them so they can cuddle together.

Food / Re: Substituting Stevia for sugar when baking
« on: September 11, 2022, 02:47:14 am »
You need much less stevia for the same amount of sugar. I don't know if you would be able to get the same consistency when mixing the stevia and butter but would love to find out if you go ahead with it.

My mum had 7 siblings who had between 2 & 3 kids each, we'd gather at her sister's large property for lunch on xmas day. They had a swimming pool which was never clean enough to swim in, a trampoline, a tennis net spread over the lawn and two spits one a lamb and one pork. My parents would bring one gift each for my brother & I plus each other & Nana - repeat for each sibling. They would all go into Santa's sack & when the time came my uncle would dress up as Santa and hand out the gifts. It was always a great day & I especially remember the huge lolly scramble bag. I always felt extra special because we lived closest to Nana and would pick her up and drop her home.

Weddings / Re: Bad behavior at the Reception

Its sad that people come to these events and let their kids run wild. People are too afraid to step in and stop bad behaviour because of the possible abuse from the bad parents. Its good that the 2YO came to you for help and I hope that his mum kept a better eye on him.

It's funny how I avoided a petrol station because the guy called me "love" but if it was a female I wouldn't have been creeped out by it. I've met many older women who use 'hun' and these type of things and I've been fine with them.

Where I'm from Miss is more formal as in at a medical facility etc. Also we find people who have been to prison use Miss and Boss. It's funny how different cultures use language.

I may be uncomfortable in certain situations, if it is a one off thing I personally would dismiss it but in a work or social environment if you state that you preferred to be addressed a certain way then that should be respected.

How bloody frustrating! They're saying it's a respect thing while not respecting your wishes. Do as I say, not as I do. What a bunch of hypocrites! Is it possible to ignore them until they address you by the correct name?

I went out of my way to avoid a petrol station years ago because the guy behind the counter called me love.

I thought most western countries celebrated Labour Day. We do in New Zealand too.

Dad had a beautiful German shepherd who was trained to ignore other dogs on walks & could be walked without a leash. She would go on ahead & if someone was coming towards you she would come back to your side. She also would wait at a corner, she wouldn't cross until you did. Beautifully trained, except when someone would come to the house.

Mum was a dress maker working from home so when clients would come to the door they would be greeted by a snarling, barking beast being held back by dad saying "don't worry, she won't bite" - doesn't look like that to the stranger! I don't know why he wouldn't put her in another room, or out the back before opening the door. Actually I'm sure if he had of told her to sit she would have. It bugged me to no end!

I have a 1923 Singer, my great grandmother bought it new. Mum was a dressmaker & tried to get me to learn to sew but I never had the patience. Dad repainted the stand years ago & added a motor. Mum gave it to me a few years back. I started using it to make cage liners & hammocks when we got rats again, Mum was horrified but happy I was using it lol. It still has all its parts, I need to repair the belt though to use the tredel & have no clue how to use the button hole kit. It has been well looked after & is in great condition.

Pictured is Ash & the Singer in 2016.

Okay Ash is ADORABLE. Also here's a place where you can see what year/model your singer is so that you can get a replacement parts as you need. http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html

Thank you, Ash was my second heart rat, a very smart & special boy. It looks like the belt broke at some stage and was stapled on, or cut to remove & stapled back on so I can possibly do the same. It has the original book with it too. I think I need to get someone to come out and give it a good service, it gets used once a month & I oil it before each use but wouldn't hurt to have someone who knows what they're doing to give it a good look over. That site is awesome, thanks again.

This sounds like my dad too, he had frontal lobe damage due to MS.

Dad had successful surgery on the left side of his face for fibromyalgia. Then he developed the same pain on the right side of his face about 13 years later. I went with him to his specialist appointment where she explained that although the pain felt the same the cause was different. Beforehand two nerves were touching and they put a wedge between to separate them. This time there was demyelination of the nerve so an operation was essentially pointless and risky, instead he would be better on medication. Dad was fine for about a week then he went back to being upset about not being allowed to have the surgery. I managed to remind him of the situation which calmed him for a few weeks, rinse & repeat.

I love the plastic forks idea! Thanks!

DH is also doing battle with a robin who wants to build on the downspout above our door. It started a nest, he took it down (nothing in it and it was just a few random scraps). He put up a pool noodle. The bird took the pool noodle. (There's no way it blew away, it was in the wooded area behind our house where they hang out in the trees.) DH put the noodle back up. It came down, but this time it might have blown down. We figured nest building time was over so left the noodle down. The bird started a nest the next morning. DH took that down and put the pool noodle back up. The bird was really aggressive with him this time- flying at DH's head while he pulled the materials. The bird sat on the wire across from our door and squawked at DH every time he was out. If the birds and cats start working together, DH is in trouble.

Have you thought about hanging a nesting box near where the bird is building the nest? When you take it down if you put the material inside the box they might get the hint. Win win for everyone?
