Entertaining and Hospitality / A small gathering.
« on: September 02, 2022, 07:11:28 pm »
Before I got sick I was a volunteer with a program in my area the helps with the homeless.  I have been too sick the last two years but I’m back this year.  Anyway, I offered to host a gift wrapping party.  Maybe 10 people.  I would like to have so snacks/apps.  Any easy recipes to share?  TIA!

That’s really awful.  But I also know many people are uncomfortable with death and often just try small talk and really don’t think things through.  Prayers for you and your friends.

Work is still crazy busy, and we're shorthanded, so I haven't been able to update as quickly, but I wanted to tell you about this:

Sunday evening, MIL got a phone call from her son, BIL. After some chatting, BIL asked to speak with DH. BIL asked DH if Dog could stay in a kennel in the house. DH said that was fine. Dog travels with them everywhere, and when they were here last Thanksgiving, someone had to hold the dog (a beagle) THE. ENTIRE. TIME. to keep him from chasing the cats and getting under foot too much. I suspected it was this relative, but it could have been a couple of others, so I really didn't know.

SIL is a bit ditzy, or puts on a good act. Had I not "called them out" I believe that she would have shown up with Dog, acting like she "didn't knooooww we couldn't bring Dog," and created drama when we told her we could put Dog in the garage or someone would have to leave. We wouldn't have time to deal with it on party day. I'm glad that we dealt with it upfront and y'all helped me. I'll have to let you know how it goes.

Now, another relative wants us to post a detailed menu . . .

Am I reading wrong?  She’s bringing the dog cuz DH said it was fine?

You should get a response soon from at least one person letting you know it wasn’t them that called!  Lol

Family and Children / My Stepmother!

A little BG.  I’m in my mid fifties.  My dad and her got married 2 days after my 18th BD.  So I’ve put up with her treating me like a old pair of shoes for decades.

In 2020 I was diagnosed with oral cancer.  I had severe complications!  I’m now 2 years free and clear!  What a great time to travel to home state and see dad.  I’ve lost well over 100 lbs and at 5’8 it’s not pretty.  Having been overweight my whole life and now way to thin, I can honestly say people are cruel to all body types.

The day after my arrival the temperature dropped to 40 degrees!  I’m from south Fl and man was it cold.  Dad was cold too.  SM was out of town until the next day.  Dad turned the heat on.  Through conversation when she returned she discovered we had turned the heat on.  When my father left the room she let me know how pissed she was.  I apologized and said it really was freezing.  She then screamed at me”. IF YOU WOULD EAT SOMETHING YOU WOULDNT BE FREEZING.!”

I said nothing just choked back tears.  I cut our stay short and hightailed it home.  Having stared death in the face I refuse to just let things go anymore!  I mean they are in their 80’s. I don’t want to scream back, ok, I do but.  There were several other small things the few days we were there.

Eating is very hard for me.  Fatty me the food lover.  I won’t be winning any eating contests anytime soon.

That year I was diagnosed with oral cancer.  Treatment almost killed me.  I don't wish to have any smoking on our property.  How do I convey that>

Most stores will take it back.  However, food items can't be resold in most states.  I live in Florida.  This always comes up after a hurricane scare.  People actually return the food and water they did not need,  All goes to waste.  It really is sad.  At the very least donate it to someone, but people want their money back.

My father is almost 83.  He defeated death 3 times.  He is racist, against gays, but thinks the world of his kids and grandkids.  Kids, 1 a drug addict, 1 mentally ill, and me, average, lol.  Step kids he has raised, 1 gay, one has a gay child, one just trying to be a trophy wife.  My cousins, on his side have biracial children.  My favorite response is ok.  Then he says, "I guess I shouldn't say that, huh?"  I say No, you shouldn't.

He moves on until the next time.

Life in General / Re: Asking for donations to cover your donation

A few years ago a friend introduced me to her friend that was a very charitable person.  She was always organizing fund raisers and such.  My new found friendship lasted about 1 year until I got so sick of her.  I admit, I hung on a long time just to snoop.

She would do things like,  Okay all, I have a family in need, they need blah blah blah,  If you want, you can just give me money and I will buy whatever.  Then she would post things like, where are all my helpers????  I need your donations like yesterday!

It just really rubbed me the wrong way.  I now stick to real charitable organizations.

How would you define "nanny" in the USA?

I ask because I remember the Louise Woodward case - she was the British teenager who in 1997 was tried in California for the murder of the baby she was looking after. The British public was collectively bemused by the way she was repeatedly described in the American press as the child's "nanny", because over here a "nanny" is a trained professional. Louise was an au pair, with three days' training in childminding from the au pair organisation; no British person would have called her a nanny.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_Woodward_case

I remember the case at the time [but can't quickly find the details now], and it shocked me that two doctors were basically [when the hours were factored in] paying someone the same amount or less than the person who would serve them fries to have their child cared for.

Exactly!!!!!

I remember this case pretty well.  I don't think she did it.  I remember one of the big things was that she said was that she popped him on the bed.  We Americans were horrified until someone explained the British term and it made sense to me.

Not the same situation but close.

My DS was 15 when my mother died.  5 years ago this month.  I had my son and my husband for support, that's it.

A few days after she passed, my DS asked if his friends could come over.  I said NO.  He said to me something like. "Mom, I know you are very sad. but I'm sad too.  She was my Grandmother and I was her only Grandchild.  My friends are my siblings and I need support from them. I am grieving too."

Well, I can be rather blunt.

"Zelda, you took it upon yourself to assume our deal was set and had your mail forwarded here.  Since you have done that. I am no longer want you to live here.  Change your mail back to your current address."

No excuse is needed, just the truth.

Entertaining and Hospitality / Re: smelling food

I discreetly bend to take a smell. No big inhale.

Of course I do what I want at home :D.

Can you describe the scene? I think context may matter. Did everyone act like it was perfectly normal or was it a joke, etc.?

I can describe the scene, but then you will all know my guilty pleasure,  lol.

The real housewife's of Beverly Hills.  They are staying at a ritzy palace type place.  They "Bravo" rented the whole place and it has a private staff with chef.  Of course they are all glammed up sitting at the perfectly set table.  They are all seated and the waiter began serving the soup and described what it was.  One of the "ladies" picked up the soup bowl and brought it to her nose to take a sniff.

I mainly thought bad of it because they think they are so classy,.  I thought it was trashy.  lol

I was watching a TV show and the meal was fine dining.  One of the guests picked up their bowl pf soup and brought it up to her nose to smell it?  Is this as improper as I think it is?

It sounds like both were let go.  The one maybe - a month ago, it sounds like.  The second one definitely - just now.

Yes.  The first one about a month ago and the second yesterday.
