I agree with the others. You did the right thing.  The server was rushed off her feet, and she still managed to give you cheerful service, even if it was a bit slow.  That's the peril of going during a busy time.  I would have tipped that big, too.

Life in General / Re: Nesting Parties
« on: January 09, 2024, 05:07:46 am »

I suppose it was technically a party, in that MIL brought drinks out for all the women and we stood there enjoying watching the men wrestle with the huge dresser.  ;D

But yes, I think I'd decline a nesting party. Doesn't sound like my idea of a good time.

That sounds like a fun 'party'.  Reminds me of when my father bought the cast iron wood furnace (early 80s, I think).  All of our brothers were gone, except the youngest who was just a child, so it was me and my sister helping him wrestle it into the cellar.   He had a good frame with block-and-tackle set up, but it also helped that me and my sister were very strong young women, not dainty by any stretch of imagination.  Our mother commented on that from porch(favorably), and for years our little brother would say, 'That's my sister. Strong like ox'.    ROFL

Thinking about it now, my MIL called it a "party" when she and the rest of my ILs helped DH and I move into our first home, and that was one long day of putting beds together and moving fridges into place.

Of course, we fully intended to get pizza for everyone afterwards, and the only reason we didn't was that MIL called me and asked me to grab fish and chips instead. The only reasonable response to that is "What does everyone want?", so twenty minutes later we were all in a circle eating fish and chips while our grumpy cat was running back and forth going "OMGFISH!"

I think the whole point is that anything done with friends is fun, even work stuff.  I'd always call that a party.
BUT...as other posters mentioned, you don't invite 20 people to a party like that - it's more for the few people who would call on you for help as well.  Not random people.  Back in my 'poor' days, I often had moving parties. They always ended in food and drink, sitting in a room full of boxes.

IMO it's not a "party" if everyone is only there to do work.  I wonder why it's called "nesting"?

Nesting is what a new mother does while preparing for her new baby.  My sister went through this when she was pregnant. HOWEVER, she was high risk, so she spent most of her 'nesting' time in the hospital, trying to not lose the babies (twins).   Her mother-in-law and friends came over and set up the nursery and got the stuff ready for her. They called it 'nesting', and I'd never heard of it before. It was kind of cute, though.   Very useful.  I love the idea.

I've heard about the whisker thing, so when I bought a water bowl for my cat, I got a bigger one that wouldn't hit her whiskers.
I also found a 'whisker' bowl at a yard sale, that actually has cutouts in the sides. I use that one for crunchy food.

I work for the federal government, so there are lots of rules about what we can and cannot put up in our cubicles, mostly involving political signs during election times.   But otherwise, the rules are pretty easy to follow.

Of course, now that we're all working from home, the sky's the limit.  As long as I don't have something objectionable hanging behind me during a zoom meeting, I'm fine.

I am really struggling with deciding if I want to treat the trick or treaters this year. It hasn't been a lot of fun the past few years (only a few kids show up; none of them want to interact... I might get a grunted thank you.) I don't have children, so I don't feel like I've abused the system by taking and not giving. Yet, I still feel guilty for not treating. There's a movie that has sparked my interest at the theater, so maybe I should spend the two hours doing that??? I guess we'll see how I'm feeling on Saturday.

Don't feel guilty.  I gave up on trick-or-treaters years ago.  It seems that apartments I've lived in bring out the worst brats.  The last apartment I was in, the kids were either vandals, or they'd try to take advantage and stick their whole arm in the bowl of candy and scoop the whole thing into their bag.  So I didn't even answer the door anymore.
Now I live in an over-50 condo complex, and no children ever come by. I'm relieved.

I'm very fond of the Reese's peanut butter cup commercial, that says, 'Turn off the light and don't answer the door!'.   I can live with that.   ;D

Thank you for sharing; it helps to know I'm not the only one. It's sad that a few bad people can ruin the whole thing (although I guess that's sort of theme here!) And I love that commercial. Trust me, I've already purchased the treats... I just haven't decided who will be eating them!!!  ;D

I live alone, so it's OBVIOUS who will be eating them!   ;D

The Work Day / Re: How early is on time?

I sign into meetings early because in case I mess up on the technology or phone number. But I haven't had any meetings start early except for chit chat. In fact, meetings usually start a few minutes late in case people join late.

I think the they are rude. I'm also in the camp of "Say what you mean." Imagine if they pull this on a client.

I always say that it's a requirement for the host to say, 'We'll start in a few more minutes, after more people join'.

LOLs / Re: Gross Out (Not for the faint of heart redux)
« on: September 30, 2022, 07:00:53 am »
I was showering once, blew my nose in there, and - diagnosed a bad sinus infection.  Seriously - a three layer parfait of grossness.  How bad was it?  I made an appointment to see a physician (or physician's assistant, based on the clinic our insurance used) and told the guy what had happened.  By the time I got through describing the second layer, his face was greenish and he was typing a prescription on the office screen.  I still described layer number three.  He was a bit greener of face by the time I left, but he tried playing it off by telling me to bring in a sample "next time".

So, I blew my nose on the way to the appointment & had a clean white tissue full of the results.  He never again asked me to PROVE that I had a sinus infection like that.  If I said that I had one, I got the prescription.

I also proved to more than one medical provider that I can diagnose myself with strep throat, as there is a distinctive taste to it.  Turned out my daughter might have been a carrier...between the two of us, there were school years when the only thing keeping strep at bay was running everything through the dishwasher, even toothbrushes.

I know I'm over a year late here (haven't checked this group in awhile), but have you tried Mucinex?  Guaifenesin.
I used to get 6-7 sinus infections a year, to the point where my sinuses were actually calloused (6 CT scans showed that), and I worried about developing a resistance to common antibiotics.  One ENT doctor prescribed guaifenesin, before it became an OTC med.   Never again.  I'm not kidding.  Not a single sinus infection in over 10 years, thanks to this miraculous now-OTC med.   I don't take it every day anymore, but anytime my sinuses start to clog up (usually creating the inevitable sinus headache), I take it, and voila, it's gone.  Kaput.  Nose runs, no infection. No antibiotics.
It's a very mild drug that doesn't seem to react or bother any of my other many many meds, so it's okay for me.  I know that some people don't react well to it, and some have adverse effects, but overall, it's been excellent for me.
Mucinex is the brand name and it's very expensive.  Guaifenesin is the generic, considerably cheaper version.

Dear Cocoa Bean,

Puh-leeze stop climbing onto my desk and hitting buttons on my keyboard or headbutting me when I am trying to WFH?

I am happy to provide skritches anytime, but inputting things at work before I am ready is no bueno!

Sincerely,

The Provider of Noms

Yeah, I get this.  I can be typing away on the laptop when this little furry head is suddenly shoved under my wrist.  So I have to skritch, IMMEDIATELY if not sooner.
Fortunately, it hasn't been very disruptive.  Work still gets done.

Life in General / Re: should I place another order?
« on: August 01, 2022, 09:47:42 am »
I also don't think you should feel guilty.  You answered the survey truthfully and received a refund.  Another company might not have given you anything back.  You never know.  If I were you I'd only use this florist again if you have occasion to do so; not because of a guilt feeling about what happened on this occasion.

I recently received an order of canned cat food from my favorite on line pet company.  The package was damaged and several of the cans were dented and one had to be thrown away.  I decided to inform the company because it seemed like the cause was because of how the box had been packed for shipment.  To my surprise they gave me a $5 refund on my credit card.  I thanked them and said that I hadn't expected anything as a result of my email; which was to just inform them of shoddy packaging.

As long as you are honest in reporting problems to a company I'm all for reporting them. Nothing to feel guilty about IMO.

I've used that company, and they are amazing.  I once ordered a case of prescription food for my elderly cat, and she HATED it.  I wrote to them and asked if I could send the rest back, and they just gave me a full refund and told me to donate the food somewhere.   Wow, above and beyond!
And recently, my friend ordered a new covered litter box from them, and it turned out to not be as large as she needed, and again, the company just refunded her and told her to donate it.  (And that's how I got a 2nd litterbox for my crew.)
They are an excellent company.

Life in General / Re: No Dogs Allowed
« on: July 14, 2022, 06:17:14 am »
I agree with any of the previous suggestions, but you might want to add, 'If you bring your dog, you will be invited to leave immediately', or something to that effect.  You will NOT be leaving their dogs at your house, and they will NOT be 'allowed' to leave their dogs in their car (very dangerous!).    And hold your stance.  Do not let them bamboozle you into something you do not want to do (i.e. take the dogs to your house so they can destroy it).

The worst part is, the people who *insist* that Fido goes everywhere, don't bother to train Fido at all (most of the time).

Well, I have zero experience in this, but I do have an opinion.
Boot them.  Boot them all.  If the other members mention it, just say that 'it wasn't working out'.   You can bet that if they were ****-talking you behind your back, they were ****-talking about you to other members as well.  So the ones in the know, will know.  The others won't care.
Then find some other moderators who can act like adults and not high school mean girls. \
What is this forum about?

I agree.  She is bullying you and creating a hostile workplace.
That's a keyword for HR.  Hostile workplace. Report her.

This is not the way "hostile workplace" works.
The phrase doesn't refer to general hostility or meanness.
It refers to consistent treatment of people who are in a protected class.

Wow, Thanks! I learned something new today.  You're never too old to learn.
