There's a phrase I learned on here, is it a gift or an obligation? My dad wanted to give me a wall hanging his grandma made him to store baseball equipment. I told him it was cute, but we already had a place to store his baseball stuff and his helmet wouldn't fit. If we took it, it was with the understanding that it was a gift that we could later dispose of as we needed. He chose not to give it to us.

If it's a gift for you, then you can do whatever you want with it. If your parents have expectations on what you do with it then it is an obligation, and one that you don't want. Can you have a straightforward discussion with them, if you give this to me then I can do whatever I want with it, including modifying it or throwing it away? If not, it's an obligation and I don't want it.

So I've found a random new hobby. Polishing and painting dice, because why not? I tried doing it for money but it was too stressful.

Are we talking knitting, here?  I'm always looking for new ideas.  I've heard of the kitchener stitch, but only used it for joining pieces together and I've used a duplicate stitch for adding designs (mostly letters/names).  Do you have any links or photos?

Oops.  I just noticed the photo.  It looks awesome.  But I can't enlarge it enough to see the stitch.

Yes, knitting. Here's the youtube video, I guess it is a duplicate stitch so now I know what to call it!

I blocked the scarf first so the embroidery part would sit on top and give it a more solid appearance. I also knitted the scarf at an angle because I wanted clear "sides" rather than a tube, the increase/decrease gave it an edge so it would lie flat. It was some fun math making a matching angle grid in MS paint to lay over the letters and create the pattern.

Slightly bigger photo?

Finished this scarf, it's around 10 feet long I think. This is the first time I've gone back over and added patterns on the top with a kirschner stitch. It took forever and used up all the yarn, but I'm please with how it came out.

The Work Day / Re: "you tell me" put down or learning tool
« on: November 18, 2020, 07:29:54 pm »
I also use a version of "you tell me" to start a discussion of how they can figure it out on they're own. Because I might know the answer to what this piece of code does, but the person will quickly come to an area of code I'm not familiar with. I'd rather teach them how to use the tools to find out on their own. I do try to preface it with "I can tell you, or do you want to learn how to use tool xyz?" because they might be in a rush. It's hard to gauge when someone goes from being new and in-training to being experienced and just having a quick question. I'll have to be more careful in the future.

I've also heard "you tell me" in a meeting where the person didn't know, and wanted us to go investigate and let them know what the answer is.

Is the manager treating you more like a new hire? It would irritate me for someone to say "you tell me" in a training context when I'm already established in the area of work.

When fleeing a monster (King Kong, Godzilla, Cloverfield, etc.) stay away from easily recognizable buildings and monuments. Those monsters will always attack the Golden Gate Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, Central Park, etc. They never go to random side street with no identifiable markers.

Oddly this does not work with zombies. Those things go for modern suburbia housing, malls, and nameless hospitals.

If you need information, just turn on the TV. No need to change channels, or wait for the commercial break to be over. It will start on a newscast with the information you need immediately.

If it does turn out well, I'd like to post a photo so other people can make their own if they like it. I want to contribute to groups I'm in. I'll definitely wait until well after Christmas before posting, and it's a good idea to not mention it was a gift. But making it for someone you've never met, it's possible they don't like it or they just don't post photos on Facebook, I don't want to wait forever for someone to maybe post it or not.

I have the option of telling the person who I am. I'm leaning towards not telling.

Entertaining and Hospitality / Post a picture of a gift you gave
« on: October 23, 2020, 02:08:56 pm »
I am doing a secret Santa online, and I'm making a gift for the person I was assigned. The person is on facebook and in a few fan groups I'm in, but we are not friends and don't know each other. The gift is customized to the fandom we are both in. (Like we are both Dr. Who fans, and I'm making a Dr. Who scarf, something like that.)

Would it be appropriate after sending the gift, and waiting some amount of time, to post a picture of the gift in the fan group? If it turns out well I'd like to show off a little, but I also don't want to steal anyone's thunder and post a picture first. How long should I wait? Or should I just post on my own facebook page? Or not at all?

I've used linen for hardanger, and I usually jump right in. You might need to check the size, you'll probably want to go over more than just a 1x1 thread to make a square. But assuming you have plenty of thread and you start with a neutral color that won't stain, I don't see why you couldn't just start making your project. If it's not looking right you can just take it out.

I just learned how to do loom-less lattice beadwork. It was surprisingly fun.

Entertaining and Hospitality / Re: How private are bedrooms?
« on: January 23, 2020, 07:49:35 pm »
I also wouldn't go into a bedroom without express permission. I had to declare my entire upstairs private to my mother in law after she
1. Opened the closed door to my bedroom while I was getting changed, while we had guests in the house (My husband was hosting, I was getting the kids a bath and ready for bed)
2. Told me the reason my daughter wouldn't clean her room was because I was so messy.
3. Then my daughter (5 at the time? 6?) told me the same thing.

She still came upstairs a couple of times while we were hosting and I was getting the kids ready for bed, but she stays downstairs now. I get wanting to see the kids, but I'll send them down to her if I can.

So yeah, no upstairs for Grandma, and I wouldn't go into other peoples' bedrooms (or any room with a closed door) without permission first.

The Work Day / Re: Do I tip?
« on: October 10, 2019, 01:23:17 pm »
I like the idea of a thank you card or something of that sort, thanks everyone!

There is a travel team with a long section on tipping, but it uses words like "customary" and "typical". My company uses a lot of contractors, but they are functionally treated as full employees, so I'm not sure if getting clarification on whether the shuttle drivers are company employees or not would help much.

The Work Day / Do I tip?
« on: October 08, 2019, 02:19:55 pm »
I am transferring to a new role that doesn't require much travel (Yay!), but I have one more trip to train my replacement.

I'm supposed to park at work and take a shuttle to the airport to save on travel expenses. The van has my company logo on it, but I don't know if the drivers are considered employees of my company or if they are contracted. I've seen them in the building a few times, but I don't believe they have employee badges, my best guess is they are contractors. They are always the same two drivers, John in the morning and Bob at night.

John and Bob are great. They help me with luggage, we've chatted about our lives, they make sure I'm picked up and dropped off safely. Because they help with luggage, I've tipped in the past. My shoulder acts up and it really helps, and I thought you were supposed to tip a buck a bag.

John says thank you and tells me it isn't necessary, but takes the tip. However, Bob insisted I shouldn't tip the last time I tried. We're friends, it's not necessary, he's doing his job, etc. The last time I traveled I didn't tip either.

Should I continue to tip John and not Bob? Should I not tip either because they are more like coworkers? Either way feels uncomfortable, for what it's worth.

I had a fun time doing my own hardanger design combined with a celtic pattern and lettering. I should have done higher contrasting colors. I think it got second in the original pattern category?
