He tried to go to my husband and say I'd lost my mind and would regret having a darker ceiling. That didn't work since it was my husband's idea to paint the ceiling darker.

...and that likely would have cost him my future business. Mistakes happen. Yes, they should have clarified before assuming it was an error, but after the fact the only correct response is a sincere apology.

In one of the threads, there were posts about porcelain vs stainless steel sinks. I have a friend who installed a new bathroom sink that she loves but I thought it was ugly. Buying appliances and budget are personal choices and I would be livid if a handyman took that away from me. If I have to live with *his* decision, he's going to eat the cost and I will thank him for the free sink.

I agree with this.  And would be very, VERY upset if someone replaced my kitchen sink with a similar model.  My sink is fine.  It's a perfectly functional stainless steel, deep well dual sink.  What I want is a stainless steel, deep well single sink.  It's very low on the priority list, because there's nothing wrong with the current one.

So, yes.  I would flay out refuse to pay for something I didn't want and didn't ask to have replaced.

I live in a rental apartment, so if the handyman decided arbitrarily that he thought I should change the sink, I'd be furious. No way am I paying for the damage he's caused, and I might even have to sue him just so I'd be able to prove to my landlady that it wasn't my idea. I'm not going to risk eviction because some dude decided to play decorator without my consent.

well, in a rental apartment, you shouldn't be hiring the handyman anyway. Your landlady should.

You are properly right in most cases, but I have certainly seen rental situations where the odd jobs are the responsibility of the renter (usually in exchange for cheap rent.) Or the landlord may allow minor improvements like paint. But even in this sort of situation, I would think that a new sink would at least need to be approved (and paid for) by the landlord. A handyman doing extra work really could cause issues to this arrangement.
