Pros and Cons of Facebook
« on: June 12, 2018, 06:57:33 pm »
I've never been a big Facebook user, partly because I'm rather private and partly because I just don't have that much to say.  When I graduated college, I opened an account so that if any of my classmates (or anyone else) wanted to send me a message they'd be able to find me.  I rarely post and up until recently only lurked and liked some posts now and then.

Lately, I've been reading article after article about all the different things Facebook tracts and even though I have nothing to hide (my life is boring - not that that's a bad thing), it makes me slightly uneasy.  I'm really considering deleting my account but I'm wondering if there are any repercussions that I haven't thought about.  Our home owner association has a page and I'll miss that but I really don't care much about the rest of it.

I might just choose to keep the account and never log in and if someone needs me they can message me.  If I do go ahead and close the account, is it acceptable to just do it and just disappear?  Do I owe anybody on there any kind of explanation or notification?  I am not great with this social media stuff and it would be helpful to hear other's ideas on this.

No, you don't owe anyone anything. It would be nice if you just posted a farewell, like "sorry folks, I have decided FB is not for me any more. if you need to contact me, you have my email/phone #/whatever" but you don't have to. Leave it up for a week or so in order for everyone to have the opportunity to see it, then close it. I think you still have the option of reopening it within 90 days, so if you decided you did miss it, you could reactivate.

Having said that though, if you are just lurking mostly and not posting, not playing games, not doing those "test your IQ" etc type of things, you're not putting anything out there for anyone to track. Don't fill in the About stuff, don't post pictures, that sort of thing. Then you can still see other people's posts and the groups you are interested in.

A belated thank you for your advice.  I do not take surveys or post pictures, etc.  It's reassuring to hear that there isn't much to track if I avoid those things.  I'll probably keep the page, at least for now but it's helps to know how to "bow out" if I should choose to do so.  Thanks!
