Aleko -- That's interesting about the polystyrene disc for pizzas. How long ago was the change made?
I think it was about a year ago. Maybe two, tops.

I'm back... from the conference with too much swag. (I tried to avoid some of it, but failed miserably!) The most unusual item was an absorbent cup holder stone. Apparently, you put it in the bottom of your car cup holder and it takes away the moisture from drinks. We'll see how it works!

Another company gave me socks with their logo. They will probably go like the company T-shirts that I received... become wear for bumming around home in.

You might think that the screwdriver set might have won, but this actually useful because you can use it for repairing dance shoes.

Some of the companies were providing samples of their goods, which would be strange give-aways, but being that they were not logo-ed out, I don't think they count. (A set of pillow cases. Clip-on rhinestone earrings.)

I just went through my collection of cloth bags and tossed many prior to attending this. Don't worry, new replacements came home with me! And of course, many new pens, highlighters, and notepads were acquired.

Please tell me you took them to the charity shop?

Most of my promotional cloth bags come from buying something in a charity shop and them giving me a bag, although the best freebie bag we own came from Bi1 [bien (=good), geddit? ::)] supermarket - when our local ATAC rebranded, we got swag! ;D

Yes, they were placed in the bag to be donated to the veterans group that picks up donations. I try not to toss anything to the dump if I think it has more life to it. Although, I have never had a charity shop place my buys in a reusable bag, but if I ever find one that does, I would gladly share my swag with them.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that .

I've come home with another lovely example of a freebie bag today. :D

I like to use "toss" to mean "sent them out of my house to the appropriate place based on what they were."

I just can't be bothered to give all the details about recycling or charity shops, etc.

I use "threw out" to mean "in the garbage."

I didn't think anyone was going to analyze my post to figure out where I sent the bags or I would have maybe worded things differently. I didn't think anyone would care where the bags went... especially because my point was really to state that I received a new collection of bags. But yes, by tossed I mean that I removed them from my house.

Sorry, it's probably my UK English: if someone writes "recycled", I'd assume charity shop/given away/put in the recycling.

Here "tossed" is for 'I put it in the bin [garbage]' or 'people driving past my house tossed all their fast food leavings in my garden'.

It could be to do with/linked to our use of "tosser" as a not-very-nice term for people whose actions we disapprove of?

A friend of mine is in palliative care right now, she gets disposable syringes for insulin twice a day, she has trouble swallowing which results in her biting down (can’t explain why but it’s a thing) on cutlery so they’ve ordered plastics for her to make it more comfortable. Her pills and the applesauce she takes them with come in one use plastic cups, single use plastics come with adult diapers. There are a ton of good reasons, health wise, that single use materials are a good idea.
But science is incredibly underfunded. They must be able to come up with a material that is safe to burn or will be eco-friendly disposable. It’s so worth the research.

Who needs expensive research?  Single-use cardboard cups and wood or bamboo eating utensils are available now, and aren't even expensive. So often the use of plastic and polystyrene is pure laziness and thoughtlessness. As in the case of chilled pizzas, which for decades in the UK were routinely placed on a disc of extruded polystyrene before being sealed in film and packed in a cardboard box. But as soon as public concern here about non-biodegradable petrochemical substances reached a critical level, all the pizza-makers replaced the extruded polystyrene disc with a biodegradable cardboard one - which, guess what, works every bit as well. All those millions of polystyrene discs, which will be clogging up landfill for centuries, were simply unnecessary from the outset. As are your friend's plastic cups and spoons.

Just a quick thought. Many of the already more friendly single use products wouldn’t work for healthcare and biodegradable products need air to biodegrade, which they don’t get when out in land fills and therefore add as much to the problem as anything.
Also, research into science is not a waste. Did I mention they figured out how to grow food without water? How awesome is that?

While shopping today, I saw a whole display of reusable straws and thought of this thread. I brought some glass ones. Now I need to find a case for them so I can carry them around.

I have a new give-away that I want! I was hanging out in the basement when a giant flying bug decided that it wanted to play tag. I ran aaaallll the way upstairs to get the fly swatter and by the time I returned, he changed the game to hide-n-seek. I decided that I should get an extra swatter for the basement. Took a look at the one that I do own and it apparently was a give-away from a company. So whoever gives me a fly swatter will win my business!!!   ;D

My company (higher ed) gives out swag to welcome employees back each year. We got 2 of those folding camp chairs, an all terrain wagon, and a rolling heavy duty cooler. All the things you'd take on vacation, except school is starting and any vacation is months away. But still nice for the future.

That's super funny!!! If a funeral home has that type of humor, then show me how to pre-plan a shing-ding!
