I wouldn't use a stainless steel straw. The only time I use a straw is when I get a drink with a lid (fast food). If it's just an open glass, like you get in a restaurant, I just pick it up and drink from it.

People with sensitive mouths and certain dental conditions have to use straws or suffer intense pain.

It’s not hard to get around the bend with the proper brush. My straws came with a brush. I don’t see how they are dangerous. It took me a while to get used to them, but plastic straws are so terrible for the environment. I thought it important to at least try.

Thanks for explaining the brush. They are dangerous to me because they are so long, sharp, and stiff. They really scare me, as seeing kids sword fighting with plastic straws. So my mind mind goes from there. Parent your kids. Many don’t.

Is a stainless-steel straw any more dangerous in that sense than a pencil? Or a pen, a dowel for a craft project, a table fork, a pair of adult-size scissors, a knitting needle, a screwdriver, or even a piece of candy cane sucked until it forms a point? (In fact, a lot of those are significantly sharper than a straw.) Kids handle (and sometimes mishandle) objects at that level of potential danger all the time. Occasionally there is a tragic accident associated with them, but there are also occasional tragic accidents from something as simple as a misstep on level ground or choking on a food that the person has eaten many times before without incident.

The only major difference I see between a stainless-steel straw and those other items is that the rest are "normal" things that kids have been exposed to for generations and stainless-steel straws are new. (And humanity in general tends to overestimate the danger of things that are new and different and underestimate the danger of things that are old and familiar.)

As someone who almost had their eyeball punctured at five by the neighborhood psychopath with a hose stake, no slim metal tubes should be around kids without constant adult supervision.  Had he stabbed me any differently I would be blind in one eye today, assuming the eye could have even been saved.

I just went to another conference over the weekend and figured I would update the unusual give-aways.

I had previously mentioned flyswatters and one of the vendors was giving them away, but they had various give-aways (including maracas and tambourines, although those are probably more industry specific) that you had spin a wheel for. I did not win the flyswatter, but rather got... another bag!  =(  (It is a rather pretty bag, though.) However, I am going to watch for them in the future and try spinning again!!!

Tiny flashlights that I think could be worn around the neck. They have industry purposes, but who couldn't use one more flashlights?

But the most unique and my pick of the day... the cooking spatula! I think it has four different uses, but is probably the way I would use it the most.

The Shout laundry pens (with company logo) are really popular right now. Also, camera covers for laptops.  A large custom-made cookie with corporate logo or mascot is always a fan favorite - as long as the cookie is tasty and not just pretty.

I had to google that, but I think they're a brilliant idea!

[I just use a re-useable screen wipe (designed to be stuck to the laptop, removed, restuck, etc) that is too small to be remotely useful to cover the camera.]

I keep discovering new ones. None of this is probably helpful to the OP, but I suppose we will have quite the list going!

Band-aid holder. It came with probably a dozen colored band-aids, although I have since refilled it. It keeps them together and from being wrinkled or torn until you need one. I did not think much of it at the time, but now I find it rather nifty!

Darn you, DaDancingPsych!

I just came here to say that I'd found one of these in my parents' house when we were cleaning it out to sell last week, and that I thought it was a great idea.

(which one is the "pouting" emoji?)

Seriously, though--I too find them nifty.
When my kid were little, I carried a similar one (but wimpier) in my tote. One day I was changing trains in the Times Square subway station and saw a friend ahead of me limping, with the backs of her flats rubbing her feet.  (It can be a small city sometimes.)
I was able to save the day by stopping her and getting out my adhesive bandages.

Ever since, I try to always have one around.

And those little cases can go, not just in a tote or purse or kids' backpack, but they'd be easy to have in a desk.

I wonder if other travel items would be popular. A cotton-swab case, perhaps.

Or an empty flat zippered case to put your own manicure tools in. The tools are expensive to provide, especially if they're any good. But the case might be really nice.

Or other little pouches. The travel pouch/bags, maybe?

Pill cases?

Darn you, DaDancingPsych!

I woke up this morning thinking "I MUST be faster than TootsNYC today!" I had completely forgotten about the band-aid case, but I use it all the time. (A student is ALWAYS wanting a band-aid!)

I agree, those travel cases and such would make excellent giveaways!

Today, you win! ;) ;D

I used to have a folded strip of plaster [band-aid] - the sort where you cut off the exact length needed, which then becomes the depth of the plaster.  If that makes sense.  It had a line of the yellow protective stuff down the middle.  Because the case was plastic and solid enough, I carried a small pair of scissors in there, too.

Perfect for the days before I gave up having backs on my shoes.

I'm sure it's bigger than the band-aid case, but it was so useful.

The engineering firm where I'm temping now offers free fresh fruit in the lunchroom and waiting room:  not just apples, oranges, and bananas, but clementines, pears, and bunches of grapes.

When I was doing database admin stuff for a blood bank, I got an entire gift bag of swag as one of my goodbye gifts:  a T-shirt, a pin, a slap bracelet, a coffee mug... and an adorable vampire bat plushie!  (Other gifts from people I worked with there included a Starbucks gift card, a box of candy, and multiple new connections on LinkedIn.)

that last one would make a great purse/backpack light.

I went looking for something like that so I could see in the bottom of my big tote bag with the black lining.

I just use the flashlight on my phone.

I need both hands to rummage around in there.
I hooked a keychain light like that to the zipper pull on the pocket inside my bag.

Great suggestions, Amara!

Quite a coincidence this topic was brought up again. For some reason (I know the reason, but can't tell you ;)) my company had to get rid of all of the giveaways we had in storage, including the company store inventory.

I was absolutely gobsmacked at the amount and variety there was. Trunk organizers, tote bags (different sizes and designs), back packs, pens (galore!), pen-type toolkits, visors & hats, sun glasses, hard covered note pads (different sizes), zippered notebook binders with pockets, travel mugs, thermoses, stuffed animals, cute toys, flashlights, ear buds, T-shirts, etc., etc., etc.

It's a good thing that Event Planner (EP) and I live in a large room. We had 4 huge carts (6' tall, 8' wide 3-4 shelves) packed with boxes along with 3 tables stacked 3 boxes high. It was like an obstacle course to get through the room.

It took more than a week for EP and her volunteers to clean out the storage rooms, sort through the stuff, separate the items into equal parts for an employee giveaway which took place in various locations within the building during lunch hours. It wasn't advertised at all.

The first giveaway event took place after an annual ceremony (maybe 300 employees). EP saw people taking 10+ items and she thought "No, no, no. We have 3,000 employees. Everybody gets to take something."

So at the lunchtime event where all employees were involved she posted signs and coached her volunteers to say "One or two items only."

Almost everything was gone within 45 minutes. EP told me that she saw several people who work at the other end of the building (where a giveaway stand was set up) come to this side of the building, trying to get more swag.

Freebies? Oh.my.goodness. People went crazy.
