I am so sorry for what your friend and you are going through. I can make an educated guess of the disease.I would definitely go with gift cards. Your thought of a restaurant would be lovely, I think. Perhaps coupled with a box of fancy candies? Because you don't know them on a very personal level, you don't know if Netflix or Starbucks or Sephora would actually be used, so the more generic you make it, probably the better. Regardless of the gesture, the fact that you made it all will be appreciated.(((hugs)))

If I get a specific restaurant card, I couldn’t be sure there would be one in a convenient area for them, so I’m guess a major chain would be better than a specialty type of thing.
The two most REALLY important and valuable gifts you can give to any nurse or other medical or care worker (or come to that a teacher, or people employed in many other roles), are:[snip]2. A letter to their management saying the same thing, and that this person is a treasure to their organisation.
